1️⃣Is paraesophageal hernia the same as a regular hiatus hernia?
No. The sliding type is more common and milder; paraesophageal is the one where the stomach bulges beside the oesophagus and carries higher risks. That’s why we treat it as a distinct, more serious condition.
2️⃣Do I really need surgery or can medicines fix it?
Lifestyle changes and medicines help reflux but won’t fix the mechanical problem of the herniated stomach. For symptomatic paraesophageal hernias, surgery is the definitive solution to prevent complications.
3️⃣How long is the hospital stay and recovery?
Most patients go home in 1-2 days. You’ll be back to desk work in 7-10 days and full activities by 4-6 weeks.
4️⃣Will I have big scars?
No. Laparoscopic means tiny incisions – most people barely notice them after a few months.
5️⃣Is it safe? What about risks?
Like any surgery, there are small risks, but in experienced hands the procedure is very safe. We discuss everything transparently during your consultation.
6️⃣Can it come back?
Recurrence is low (under 10% in most studies) when the repair is done properly with hiatus closure and fundoplication.
